“It’s not just a job, it’s a life choice.”
The Drake family has been farming for 4 generations and Scott and Debbie’s son, Matthias hopes to take over some day to extend it to 5 generations.
“Better handling with less stress, and improved forage would be the biggest things we’ve worked on,” says Scott. With these changes and a few others, we were able to join the Certified Island Beef.”
“A better quality product increases your marketability, and there’s no point in producing it if you can’t sell it. Consumers these days are very conscious of where their food comes from, and what goes into creating it.”
For the Drakes, it’s not just about improving, but also educating. For the last two years, they have participated in Open Farm Day, in an attempt to teach people where their food comes from, and to create awareness for the local product they produce.
“We’re proud of what we do here,” says Scott, “and I know people recognize that as soon as they see it.”
