Kevin and Susan Simmons are the proud owners of a first generation beef farm, specializing in both the cow calf and feedlot sides of production. The pair, with the help of a hired hand, grow most of the crops they need to keep their cattle healthy and happy.
For Kevin and Susan, the Certified Island Beef program and its requirements provide an opportunity for farmers to be recognized for the hard work they put in every day. “We were already doing a lot of the additional care. Our calves fit the program, and most of the qualifications you needed to have, we were doing them anyway. Humane handling, Verified Beef Program, and the other courses, we already had them in practice. Better cattle, better beef, that’s what we work hard to create.”
